Re-registering a Birth
Re-registration of a birth is the completion of a new record of birth which supercedes an original registration. There is no cost for this registration although there is the usual charge for the issue of any new certificates.
Why do I need to Re-register my child's birth?
- If the natural parents marry after the birth of their child they are required under the Legitimacy Act 1976 to apply for the re-registration of their child's birth by using a Form LA1.
- A birth may also be re-registered to include the details of the natural father where the parents were not married at the time of birth, have not married since and no father's name was recorded at the time of the original registration by using form GRO 185 (10A)
Where can I Re-register the birth?
This can be done by attending any Register Office in England or Wales.
- For Re-registration after marriage, a Form LA1 must be completed and signed by both natural parents, but it is only necessary for one of the parents to attend the Register Office.
- To add the natural father's details where the parents are not married, a form GRO 185 (10A) must be completed and both parents need to attend the office,
Both these forms can be obtained from any Register office in England or Wales.
Information you will need to supply.
- The completed form, either LA1 or GRO185.
- A copy of the original birth entry
- Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
Can I change my child's names?
- A change in forenames may be possible if you can provide documented evidence that the new name has been used in the first 12 months from birth.
- A change of surname may be allowed upon re-registration subject to certain criteria being satisfied.
