Walking and Cycling
Walking and cycling in the Isles of Scilly is a delight particularly for walkers. All the Islands are relatively small and even the largest, St.Mary's is only 3 miles across and has a footpath just over 10 miles long that skirts the coastline. Walking on the off-islands is a must for there is very little traffic and the Islands are perfect for exploring by foot. If available, bikes may be hired from Tresco Estate and the picture illustrates a couple looking across Appletree Bay.
The tarmacked road system on St.Mary's is largely inland apart from three very short stretches and although traffic can be busy at times in Hugh Town when the freighter is being unloaded, the roads are much quieter than on the mainland.
