Personal and Community Development Learning (PCDL)
The Council of the Isles of Scilly provides a wide variety of courses and training opportunities through the Harold Wilson Lifelong Learning Centre at Carn Thomas.
A wide range of vocational and general interest courses from Accounting to Yoga are available and details can be found in the latest Learning Directory, which is available at the Town Hall and the Lifelong Learning Centre on St.Mary's and various other central locations across the Islands or can be viewed and downloaded here - it is a large file and the download may take several minutes - Learning Directory 2007/08
For the year 2005/06 Lifelong Learning ran 85 courses resulting in 637 learning experiences for 348 learners.
Individuals come into adult education from a wide variety of backgrounds at different stages of life, each with their own personal strengths, anxieties and hopes. There are no fixed points of entry and exit, the aim is to offer choice and the opportunity for continuous development by training and learning to help build confidence, develop personal skills and enhance personal quality of life.
The Learning and Skills Council (LSC), gives an annual grant to the the Council of the Isles of Scilly to fund Personal and Community Development Learning, Family Learning and Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy. Additional funding is also sought from other areas such as the European Social Fund. Partnerships with Truro and Cornwall Colleges as well as other mainland education providers enable delivery of a full range of vocational and some academic courses to be offered in the Islands.
