Adult and Community Learning

Welcome to the Harold Wilson Lifelong Learning Centre.

We are providers of recreational, vocational and ‘e' learning on the Isles of Scilly. The department has strong links with colleges and other learning providers on the Mainland. This enables us to offer a full range of courses, skills training and qualifications here on the islands.

We have qualified impartial advisors who are able to help you make decisions about what you want to do, whether it's:

  • Choose and new hobby
  • Decide what courses to take
  • Progress at work
  • Choose a new career
  • Develop your skills
  • Develop the skills of your staff

We hope this will provide the necessary information you are looking for. However if you are looking for something more, please pop in and see us or use the details below to find out more...

Skills and Qualifications

Our World is changing - we all need more skills than ever before!

Two out of three jobs in the future will require a higher level of skills and better qualifications. In fact, in less than 10 years, there will be very few unskilled jobs. Learning a new skill or gaining a new qualification could be a step in the right direction towards moving up the career ladder at work, earning more money, finding a job, or just simply improving your confidence and self-esteem.

The Council of the Isles of Scilly is committed to providing high quality training for skills and qualifications that are relevant to businesses on the Islands.

We have strong links with mainland training providers such as Cornwall College and Truro and Penwith College, Business Link and the various skills sectors in Cornwall. These enable us to offer a variety of development opportunities including apprenticeships, business skills seminars, business support, nationally recognised qualifications, NVQs, skills for life, technical skills training and training needs analysis. Course delivery takes place on the Islands and may include taught sessions, self-study/distance learning, assessment in the workplace and learning on-line using the Internet.

Learning for Life

Have you ever fancied learning a new skill?

Perhaps you've always been meaning to tap into your creative side, or even further your skills in an area of interest? Whatever your aspirations the Lifelong Learning Centre has a plethora of recreational based courses which provides a wide and varied range of programmes to suit all abilities and interests.

Learning entertains us, gives us an opportunity for self expression, provides us with a sense of achievement and creates lasting friendships with others. It stretches us mentally and physically, teaches us important new skills, helps us appreciate and helps us value different things like our natural environment.

Learning has the ability to overcome social barriers, empower individuals, reduce levels of crime and leads to healthier lifestyles. In short our quality of life is greatly enhanced by it.

Go on try something new!

eLearning

Connecting Scilly with the World!

Lifelong Learning is constantly looking at the future learning provision for the islands and how to best continue it in order to meet growing demand. Part of this is to harness and develop new technologies and techniques for delivering learning to our community in the most cost effective and sustainable way.

eLearning plans to use existing and future technologies to develop a robust infrastructure, enabling us to offer a wider ranging curriculum of courses.

The unique nature of the islands means that the mainstream learning you would find in other parts of the UK cannot be delivered here, and eLearning plans to harness all the positive aspects of our current offer and using new technology and methods of delivery to develop the best learning experience possible for our community.

eLearning is also looking at how it can improve the quality of life for our older community. Partnerships are currently being created with Park House, Adult Social Care, School and the Local NHS to develop the learning and activity provision for our older community.

It is hoped that the above and much more will be taking place in the very near future, and we hope that we can continue to provide, sustainable, economical and quality courses/events well into the future.
