Youth services

The Isles of Scilly Youth Service aims to promote the personal and social development of young people in Scilly by providing them with a range of opportunities aimed at engaging and empowering them as individuals.

The Youth Service works very closely with local organisations that deliver formal and informal sessions to young people to assist them with fulfilling their legal responsibilities, providing appropriate resources, facilitating training and offering general guidance.

Young people generally leave Scilly at the age of 16 to continue their education on the mainland. Strategies exist to promote opportunities for young people to travel to the mainland to partake in a variety of sporting, cultural, educational and entertaining activities. Apart from allowing young people to get involved in new activities and compete against their mainland based peers, these trips also help young people to become more comfortable with the mainland environment. A colourful document is now available School's Out Now what? Opens in a new window to help school-leavers from Scilly. It covers many areas that concern students once the GCSEs are over such as further education and training, college-based placement, work-based placement, where to study, finances etc. A very valuable and informative resource.

The Youth Service works very hard to promote and contribute to the five outcomes contained within Every Child Matters.

  • be healthy
  • stay safe
  • enjoy and achieve
  • make a positive contribution
  • achieve economic well-being

Young people are increasingly being encouraged to help shape the services to which they have access. Regular consultation exercises provide young people with the opportunity to express their views and be heard. They are able to influence the planning and delivery process and comment on the standard and effectiveness of existing provision.

Developments with the School Council and projects like the Youth Opportunity Fund and Youth Capital Fund offer a direct route for allocating grant money to the areas that young people think its most needed. Ensuring there are enough high quality "Places to go and things to do" for young people in Scilly is a priority of the Youth Service.
