This section provides information on collecting commercial waste and the duty of care.
Commercial business rates do not include the disposal of trade/commercial waste.
A commercial enterprise must arrange waste removal with the Council.
It is the responsibility of the trader to dispose of their waste in accordance with the Duty of Care Act 1990.
Please note that businesses have a Duty of Care to ensure that all waste is stored and disposed of responsibly.
What is Duty of Care?
The Duty of Care is a law which says that businesses must take all reasonable steps to keep waste safe. Waste must be stored safely and securely and must not cause pollution to people or the environment.
The waste must be packaged in suitable containers so that it cannot fall out, blow away or escape from the receptacle.
It must be secured against unauthorised removal as far as is reasonably practical. Security should be sufficient to prevent the breaking open of containers and removal of waste by seagulls, other animals or the weather.
How can the Council help with Commercial Waste?
The Council provides a commercial collection and disposal service.
What is the cost for this service?
Business rates do not cover the removal or disposal of waste from business premises. Please contact the Technical Services Department (techservices@scilly.gov.uk) for the current rate of charges.
What about recycling?
You will be able to reduce your waste and therefore costs by disposing of any glass in the bottle banks at the back of the Town Hall or at the Old Town Inn car park in Old Town.
There is also a facility at the Waste Site, Porthmellon for recycling garden waste, wood and building rubble free of charge.
