Green waste fly-tipping

We are fortunate on Scilly that fly-tipping of large objects and hazardous materials is relatively uncommon; however, the Council has had reports concerning the unauthorised dumping of green waste. We appreciate that not everyone will be aware of the rules concerning the proper disposal of green waste, so we want to make clear that dumping green waste in public spaces, hedgerows and around our coastline is not permitted.

The primary reason we need to control green waste on Scilly is to limit the spread of damaging invasive species. This is a particular concern because our unique environment is subject to multiple scientific and conservation designations. The introduction or spreading of invasive species causes lasting damage to the conservation value of our landscape and its attraction to tourists. Reversing such damage is expensive and sometimes impossible.

We ask residents to please dispose of green waste responsibly by composting it or by disposing of it for free at the Porthmellon waste site. The site opening times are as follows:

Tuesday, 13:00 - 16:45
Thursday, 13:00 - 16:45

If you have any questions regarding the proper disposal of green waste, please contact the Waste and Recycling Team on 01720 424000 or email Infrastructure@scilly.gov.uk
