New Signs To Point The Way For Visitors

A series of 10 signs are being put up at key locations on the roads of St Mary’s to provide appropriate directional signage. This has been a long standing action point of both the Tourism Strategy and AONB Management Plan for the Islands. The purpose of the signs is to help new visitors explore the whole island and get the best out of their visit.

The signs will show;

  • the location of visitor information and public toilets in Hugh Town;

  • directions to the Garrison, Harbour, Porthcressa Beach, Holgates Green, Porthmellon Beach and Old Town from Hugh Town;

  • out of town signage for Porthloo, Old Town, Normandy, Pelistry, Telegraph, Watermill and Hugh Town.

The sign posts are a simple design, black in colour with place names in white and are made of cast iron with cast aluminium finger signs. Similar signs have been used on the islands since the 1950’s. It is hoped they will all be in place by the end of October and will complement the completion of the road resurfacing project.
