E-Day 2009: Scilly at Forefront of Energy Debate

Released on 06 October 2009

On October 6th 2009 Scilly is at the forefront of a campaign to champion energy efficiency, energy reduction and sustainable energy generation. On E-Day islanders and visitors are thinking carefully about the electrical appliances in their homes and work places. Wherever possible, people are eliminating unnecessary energy consumption by, for example, switching off lights and electrical appliances on stand-by. By the end of the day we should know how much energy even a small community can save on a single day.

E-Day follows on from an Earth Summit held at the Town Hall on St Mary’s on October 3rd and 4th.  The Earth Summit focussed on the experiences of different island communities around the world in adapting to the effects of climate change. The Earth Summit was accompanied by a range of activities across St Mary’s including art by Fran Crowe, whose work on marine borne litter was funded by the Isles of Scilly AONB.

The two events have been initiated and driven by Dr Matt Prescott, for more information please visit the official website www.e-day.org.uk.
