WASTE MANAGEMENT SITE UPDATE: KNOTWEED
The Council is aware that there are some concerns about the management of materials arising from the Porthmellon Waste Site Redevelopment Project that are potentially contaminated with Japanese Knotweed.
We can confirm that there were 2 small areas of the redevelopment project that were potentially contaminated by Japanese knotweed. These materials have been excavated, quarantined and encapsulated in a geotextile membrane (designed spec...ifically for this purpose) to be buried underneath one of the new bunds as it is formed.
The Environment Agency Guidance for burying Japanese Knotweed is recommends that it should be buried to a depth of 5 meters or wrapped in the membrane. For the avoidance of any doubt, we are doing both.
This methodology is in line with best practice and guidance from the Environment Agency, who are fully aware of the methodology being employed.
