ISLAND ROAD USERS BENEFIT FROM EXTRA ROAD MAINTENANCE FUNDING FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT FOLLOWING ABNORMAL DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE SEVERE WINTER OF 2010
Following receipt of the above grant from the Department of Transport (DFT) the Council has sought to make improvements to sections of road that have been the subject of damage caused by rain and ice during the course of last winter.
The preferred choice of material would always be hot laid tar macadam, however in the absence of a hot batching plant for preparing such material the roads are repaired with a chemical curing macadam, which although very effective is also very expensive even when bought by the ton.
The additional grant provided by the DFT equates to approximately 40 tons of macadam which has allowed for areas of repair along Pump Road on St Marys that have suffered through being subject to the raised water table.
