Hedge Trimming

The Council has circulated a guide on Roadside Hedge Management for all farmers and others, including private householders whose land is bordered by the public highway on the island.

The Council took legal advice that confirmed, in line with other parts of the country, responsibility for trimming roadside hedges resides with the tenant rather than anyone else.

The Council followed guidance issued by other authorities which indicate how and when hedges should be trimmed to keep roads safe, whilst minimising the risk of disturbance to nesting birds.

The Council is no longer funded to cut roadside hedges and will be obliged to recover the full amount of its costs should it be required to trim hedges for road safety reasons in the future.
