Notice of Election published for St Mary’s by-election

[UPDATED - 28 April 2023: please note that this news item has been updated to reflect a change to the polling date.]

The formal process of electing a new councillor for St Mary’s began today with the publication of the Notice of Election on the Council website. The deadline for nominations is 4pm on Friday 21 April.

Polling day is scheduled for Monday, 22 May 2023.

The new Councillor will take up the seat recently vacated by Mike Nelhams.

If you would like to stand as a candidate in this by-election, nomination packs are available from the Old Wesleyan Chapel and on the St Mary's by-election page on the council website. A set of Frequently Asked Questions is also available on this webpage.

To be able to vote in this by-election:

  • you need to be registered to vote. Please refer to our webpage on registering to vote for further information.
  • if you intend to vote at the polling station, you will need to show photo ID before you can be given your ballot paper. This is a new requirement that was introduced by the Elections Act 2022. Please refer to our webpage on voter ID.

In order to take effect for this by-election:

  • applications to register to vote must be received before 12 midnight on Wednesday, 3 May.
  • applications for a postal vote must be received by 5pm on Thursday, 4 May.
  • applications for a proxy vote must be received by 5pm on Friday, 12 May (unless you are changing from a postal vote to a proxy vote in which case the application must be received by 5pm on Thu 4 May).
  • applications for a Voter Authority Certificate (a free voter ID document for those who do not already have an acceptable form of photo ID) must be received by 5pm on Friday 12 May.
