The Council of the Isles of Scilly has launched a new Planning Permission Monitoring Programme, which will see annual visits by planning officers to a selection of recently approved developments.
The programme is designed to help the Council better understand how developments are delivered across the islands and ensure that approved schemes are achieving the outcomes intended through the planning process.
How the programme will work
As part of the programme, planning officers will undertake routine visits to a range of sites where planning permission has been granted in recent years. The visits may include reviewing completed developments, checking the implementation of planning conditions and recording lessons that can help inform future planning decisions and policy development.
The monitoring programme is intended to be proportionate, with support provided to property owners to address any required issues prior to the consideration of enforcement measures.
Most observations will be undertaken from public areas and, where site access is required, officers will contact owners or occupiers in advance.
The programme will focus on a range of developments including housing schemes, commercial developments, staff accommodation, heritage projects and larger developments where planning conditions play an important role in mitigating impacts and securing community benefits.
A summary of the monitoring programme and its findings will be included in the Annual Monitoring Report which is taken to Full Council.
Councillor Lynn Blackwell, Lead Member for Planning, said:
"The Isles of Scilly is in the fortunate position of having a scale of development which allows us to take a closer look at how approved schemes are progressing. This is an opportunity for the Council to learn from completed developments, ensure conditions are being delivered where required and help maintain confidence in the planning system."
