Learn Scilly Ofsted inspection report now available

The Local Authority’s adult learning service Learn Scilly has been rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted, the government department responsible for inspecting and regulating education services.

The inspection took place on 19 April 2023 and the inspection report can now be read in full on the Ofsted website.

A breakdown of the ratings in the categories assessed can be viewed in the table below. Grades are given on a scale of Outstanding > Good > Requires improvement > Inadequate. Learn Scilly achieved 'Good' in all categories. This rating follows the 'Good' rating achieved during the last inspection of the service in February 2017.

Overall effectiveness Good
The quality of education Good
Behaviour and attitudes Good
Personal development Good
Leadership and management Good
Adult learning programmes Good
Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Good

The inspection looked at the way the service is monitored, access to information, learner progress, promotion of courses, tutor performance and training, and safeguarding.

The inspector identified a number of strengths of the service noting that “Leaders are clear in their purpose and ambition to provide high quality community learning for people in the Isles of Scilly. [They] understand the important role they play in supporting social learning activities that better connects the community and reduces the impact of geographical isolation.”

Areas for improvement were also identified, including the need to increase learners’ awareness of the careers information, advice and guidance on offer and increase the focus on learner progress to allow more effective planning of future curriculums.

Cllr Avril Mumford, Lead Member for Adults, said: “Achieving “Good” in all categories of an Ofsted inspection is something that the Council and the community can be very proud of. For a small island community this is extremely encouraging. Congratulations to Jo Evans and her team!”
