As it is becoming light outside, the impacts of Storm Goretti are only now being fully revealed. We ask that everyone remains patient as we try to clear debris and remove hazards from the roads and pathways.
At present the road is closed from Parting Carn to Sunnyside and from Telegraph to the Golf Club on St Mary’s. Roads are also blocked across the highway network, so there is no clear route to town from the opposite end of the island.
Highways teams are working with the emergency services and local tree surgeons to clear fallen trees and electrical wiring. It is going to take some time to clear a safe passage, but we will aim to update you all as soon as this has been achieved.
We realise many of you will have sustained damage to your property and ask that you take particular care when assessing damage yourself and do not take any unnecessary risks, particularly at such a busy time for the emergency services.
We have decided not to reopen Carn Gwaval Wellbeing Centre or St Mary’s Library until further notice in order to help keep people off the roads until the worst of the debris can be cleared. We are aware that some of you will be experiencing issues with communication systems, but as there will be nobody at our reception hubs today, we advise everyone to make contact with the Council via email or phone if it is an issue that needs attention as soon as possible. You can call 0300 1234 105 or email enquiries@scilly.gov.uk if you don’t have a service specific contact and need to get in touch with us.
Similarly, Five Islands Academy has asked parents and carers to keep children at home and wait until they have confirmed reopening via email and on the Five Islands Academy Facebook page.
Thank you for your continued cooperation.
