UPDATE ON ROAD CLOSURES - 12.30pm, Friday 9 January 2026

The decision has been taken to close the road from the Mermaid Inn to Bank House due to the risk posed to the public by falling roof slates and debris.

A diversion will be in place around Starboard Lights to the Mermaid car park.

Given the current demand on our small teams, it may take some time to get signage in place. We ask that everyone avoids the area in the meantime for your own safety and to allow us enough space to work.

We are pleased to confirm that most roads on St Mary’s are now passable. However, the road from Telegraph to the Golf Club (Porthloo Lane) is likely to remain closed for some time until National Grid have completed the works required to make it safe. Our teams are working with those living in the area to enable access to their properties.

We advise that people continue not to make unnecessary journeys while structures are unstable and debris is widespread, but we understand that some people may need to move around to access power and supplies now that some shops and hospitality venues have reopened. If you are planning to drive or walk anywhere today, we ask you to take extra care to keep yourselves and others safe and to prevent increasing the pressure on the islands’ emergency services and highways teams.

We are working with the emergency services to contact people in the community who may be in a vulnerable position following the storm and its aftermath. However, we are aware that mobile network disruption may be causing a few issues with the usual reporting routes. If you are concerned about any member of the public who may need support to access basic services and can’t get through via the usual reporting routes, please email enquiries@scilly.gov.uk or call 0300 1234 105 so our customer services team can get your message to the appropriate team. Anyone in need of day care or a warm space will also be welcomed at Park House.

Thank you again for your cooperation.
