Waste and recycling update

The Council of the Isles of Scilly would like to update all residents and visitors on current developments to improve waste and recycling operations in Scilly.

Since the closure of the incinerator in late December 2014, some residual waste has been stored on site with the agreement of the Environment Agency, in order to start the process of transporting waste to the mainland.

Work to remove residual waste from the Porthmellon Waste Management Site is expected to start in the next few weeks with the removal of approximately 150 tonnes. An interim contract to remove residual waste, and transport it to the mainland for a period 12 months, is currently advertised on the Council’s contract pages. The Council expects this contract to be awarded towards the end of March and regular waste removal to start from mid April.

The Council is working with external consultants to develop the long-term operations for waste removal and recycling. In the next few months the Council will start consulting with the community and partners on how we all work towards dealing with our future waste.
