In response to our changing climate bringing about changes to our weather patterns, including high intensity storms, extreme heat waves and changes to our rainfall pattern. The Council of the Isles of Scilly applied for and received £250,000 of funding from the European Regional Development Fund in 2021 to help businesses on the islands install rainwater harvesting systems. These systems will allow rainwater to be stored in tanks for non-potable uses such as toilets, washing machines, process water and irrigation and are a key adaptation measure in dealing with the climate driven changes that are affecting us now.
The fund covered the cost for the design, specification, equipment, storage, delivery and installation of the systems for the successful businesses. The contracted supplier worked with businesses to help define the modifications needed for their internal plumbing to use the harvested water for non-potable purposes.
What we achieved
The funding was successfully allocated to 19 local Scillonian businesses across the islands;
St Mary’s- 10 businesses 53%
St Martins- 2 businesses 10.5%
St Agnes- 4 businesses 21%
Tresco- 1 businesses 5%
Bryher- 2 businesses 10.5 %
Rainwater tanks totalling nearly 250,000 Litres are being delivered and installed across all of the islands with a view to complete by early December 2022.
